This house for a single man to pursue his interests in music, art and entertaining is located near the edge of Redding, where summer temperatures may reach 114 degrees and winters can bring snow.

A shaded courtyard is formed by and centered on the living room and the flanking workshop / garage wings. A freestanding wall and overhead trellis is positioned across the south facade to form one side of the veranda and to shade the actual wall of the house from the hot summer sun and to allow the winter sun to penetrate its openings. Central to the house is the living room, rising 24 feet to its peak, clearing the roof of the gallery that completely surrounds it. Part of the gallery functions as circulation and part as art display; adjusting silk curtains at the corners allows it to be part of or separated from the living room.
