Salvation Army Housing
Santa Rosa, California

In a park-like setting on the edge of the downtown district, this twin-towered project houses 187 units of studio and one-bedroom apartments for seniors. A generous surrounding of trees and greenways provides for home-like privacy and outdoor activities that expand the feeling of size for the modest apartments.

Each apartment provides for the independent living of its tenants with full kitchens and generous decks offering great views to the outlying countryside. For those with a desire for greater assistance with their daily routines, meals are prepared by the sponsor's staff in the large commercial kitchen and served in the common dining room. The facility has full-time staffing to monitor the health and safety of all tenants, and to provide organized activities in the project's many indoor and outdoor common social areas.

The project was designed in cooperation with a pre-selected general contractor, and their key sub-contractors under a negotiated bid arrangement. This assured that the project would be able to meet the US Department of Housing and Urban Development's strict design and budgetary guidelines.

LDA Architects (then known as Architects Associated) made use of a simple layout and modest materials, arranged in a sensitive and sensible manner to arrive at a design that continues to please residents and management alike.
