The Peninsula Mandalay
South San Francisco, California

Cut into San Bruno Mountain, along a narrow road, this 112-unit
condominium overcomes both design and constructibility obstacles
to take advantage of generous views of San Francisco Bay.
A post-tensioned precast concrete structure is utilized to minimize
overall building height, yet provides luxurious ceilings. Clad in
a subtly sculpted skin of cement plaster and colorful aluminum curtainwall,
the tower provides a complement to the texture and color of the
mountain’s backdrop.
Working in close harmony with the builder, LDA has maintained the
economy desired, while securing the superior performance required
of a condominium. Constructed under a fast-track process, LDA kept
pace with the demanding schedule with clear and thorough documentation,
and close cooperation with other design and engineering professionals.
Designed by MBH Architects and engineered by dozens of consultants
with overlapping responsibilities, each working for a variety of
entities, was a coordination challenge for LDA. Regular, and wellmanaged
coordination sessions were utilized to maintain careful control
over progress and to assure that field problems were minimized by
judicious pre-construction planning.
